Planning a Group Event in Greenwich Village? Why The Best Nights Are At The Red Lion

Groups at The Red Lion

Finding a bar in New York City that genuinely works for a large group, one with the space, the atmosphere, and the staff to run a big night properly, is harder than it should be. Most venues in Greenwich Village are built for couples and small tables. The Red Lion at 151 Bleecker Street is not.

Since 1984, we have hosted milestone birthdays, corporate happy hours, reunions, bachelorette parties, graduation celebrations, and watch parties for some of the biggest sporting events in the world. The space is built for it. The bar is long, the main floor is open, and every evening features a three-band live music rotation starting at 7:00 PM. They get the best night out on Bleecker street.

A Space Built for Groups

The Red Lion’s layout is one of the few in the West Village that actually accommodates large parties without cramming everyone into a corner. The main floor gives groups room to move between the bar, the stage, and the tables — which matters when you are coordinating twenty people across a night that runs from dinner through to a late set.

We handle a wide range of event types: birthday parties, corporate team outings, bachelor and bachelorette evenings, alumni gatherings, graduation dinners, and sporting event watch parties. If you have a number in mind and a date, reach out via our parties page and we will confirm availability and talk through the setup.

Corporate Happy Hours on Bleecker Street

Midtown has plenty of corporate bars. They tend to look the same: neutral décor, no music, a package that expires at 8:00 PM. The Red Lion is a different proposition.

A team outing here starts with cold drinks and a proper food menu — full plates, not trays of passed appetizers — and runs into a live music evening that takes care of the energy without anyone having to organise a second venue. It is an after-work event that does not feel like an after-work event. Groups come in from across Manhattan for exactly that reason.

Happy hour runs daily. For larger teams, booking in advance secures your area of the bar and ensures we staff accordingly.

Live Music as Part of the Evening

Every night at The Red Lion features a three-band rotation covering rock, blues, and classic covers, starting at 7:00 PM. For groups, this matters more than most people factor in before booking. A live band removes the pressure of a playlist and keeps a large table energised without the forced atmosphere of a DJ-only room. It is one of the reasons the Red Lion consistently ranks among the best live music bars in NYC.

Cover charges apply on Fridays, Saturdays, and holidays. Sunday through Thursday there is no cover — which makes mid-week corporate outings and early-week birthday gatherings a cost-effective call for anyone organising on a budget.

Looking Ahead: FIFA World Cup 2026

The Red Lion has been New York’s home for international soccer for decades. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming to the United States — and multiple matches scheduled across New York and New Jersey — this will be the most significant soccer tournament the city has hosted in a generation. Groups looking to secure a base for tournament viewing should get in touch now. Space during peak match days will go fast.

Booking Your Group Event

We recommend booking two to three weeks in advance for larger parties, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays. The parties inquiry form is the fastest route — fill in your date, group size, and event type and we will come back to you directly. For something more immediate, call us on 212.260.9797.

Looking for a Different Part of the City? Our Sister Venues

The Red Lion is part of a family of bars across New York City. Each venue has its own identity and its own approach to group events — so if Greenwich Village does not fit your guests, one of these will.

The Ellington on Broadway —  2745 Broadway, Upper West Side. A sophisticated neighbourhood bar with a loyal local following, built for evenings that call for a more relaxed pace.

Ellington in the Park —  Riverside Drive at West 105th Street. Our seasonal outdoor venue in Riverside Park, open April through November. Available for group reservations from 20 to 500 guests with pre-ordered food and beverage from the catering menu — one of the most distinctive large-group settings in the city.

Tara Mor  — 150 West 30th Street, Midtown. NYC’s home for contemporary Irish hospitality, with semi-private and private event spaces and no room rental fees. Well-placed for groups coming from MSG or anywhere in Midtown.

Tara Rose — tararosenyc.com — 384 Third Avenue, Murray Hill. Three distinct event spaces, a hidden speakeasy available for hire, craft cocktails, and a brunch reputation that runs ahead of it. No room rental fees.

Across all five venues, the approach is the same: proper hospitality, dedicated event coordination, and the kind of night that people actually talk about afterwards.
